The origin of Forerunner dates to the early 1960’s, when Jymie began organizing  performances of his original music 
at the Tuskegee Alumni Clubhouse in West Philadelphia under the name “Jazz Bikini.” These were community-based
 cultural events that were also inclusive of visual arts and dance as well as jazz.
The Forerunner newsletter, the cover of which is shown below,  was produced and written for many years by the late
Monte Howard, who designed the Forerunner logo that appears throughout this website.

The newsletter found its’ way through the jazz community of Philadelphia and beyond via mailing list, jazz
clubs and Forerunner events.
